Mass Airflow Sensor

What is a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)?

The computer in your vehicle continually monitors the electrical resistance in the mass airflow sensor as the incoming air hitting the sensor cools the electrical component. With programming to evaluate how much air is flowing into the engine, this computer then directs the fuel injectors to add more or less fuel to the air-fuel blend. Any defect in how the mass air flow sensor does its job can cause serious problems to engine performance and fuel economy.

In some cases, the mass air flow sensor (MAF) can fail because of dirt accumulation. If too much dirt or debris has come into contact with the sensor, it may just need to be cleaned. If too much damage is already no, it will need to be replaced. Our service experts will be able to tell what is best for your vehicle.

The Symptoms of a Defective Mass Airflow Sensor

A faulty MAF won’t be a mystery for long given its essential nature to the engine. This means even the slightest defect can cause warning signs that there is a problem. Here are the most common symptoms associated with a MAF malfunction:

  • Difficulty starting the engine
  • Engine stalling
  • Engine hesitates or delays under fuel load
  • Sluggish or jerky acceleration
  • Engine misfires or hiccups
  • Failed emissions / overly rich or lean idle

The seriousness of a Defective Sensor

More often than not, when a mass air flow sensor is defective, the engine won’t be able to run efficiently. The engine’s performance can be so significantly impacted that damage can occur to the catalytic converter as a result. Due to the seriousness of a defective mass air flow sensor, it is an excellent decision to come into our service center as soon as you see any of the warning signs listed above.
